Durango, CO (Aztec Ruins) - 2026

Aztec Ruins National Monument was only 25 miles south in Aztec, NM. The self guided tour  takes you through the main archeological site. It is considered an ancestral Pueblo Great House with over 400 rooms. The site contains a Great Kiva and is the third largest kiva ever excavated. The ruins was used over a 200 year period.

Kiva or cermonial chamber, typically circular and mostly underground (typically accessed by a ladder throught a roof opening) were used for religious ceremonies, governance, and community gatherings. 
Most communities had many smaller kivas but only one or two great Kiva's.
