West Ossipee, NH - 2025
We stayed at Westward Shores on Lake Ossipee in West Ossipee, NH. In the summer it looks like a fun place for kids. We were there the week before they closed for the season (mid October).
Some resident deer
We visited North Conway, checked out Settlers Green which is an outlet mall and took a three hour ride on the Conway Scenic Railroad. We also took another drive on the Kangamagus Highway where the colors were still amazing. We stopped to see the "Basin" in Franconia Notch State Park
We stopped to see where the Old Man on the Mountain was prior to its collapse on May 3, 2003 which also happens to be the day we got married.
Current Prior to 5/5/2003
We also stopped to see Mount Washington Hotel and Mount Washington sitting high above it. The hotel was built by railroad tycoon Joseph Stickney for $1.7 million, it is the largest wooden structure in New England. Built between 1900-1902 it is located in Bretton Woods, New Hampshire. In 1944 the hotel hosted delegates from 44 nations to establish the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. The hotel is also famously haunted by Carolyn Stickney, Joseph's wife, who was known as "The Princess". Guests often report sightings in her former room, 314.
The peak of Mount Washington covered by a cloud that was dropping snow. Mount Washington is in the White Mountains and is the highest peak in the northeast at 6,288 feet. The summit often experiences hurricane-force winds, with over 100 days of such winds annually. It is considered one of the most severe weather locations in the world.
The clouds moved just enough to see the snow on the peak. Mount Washington has a non-profit observatory that has been continuously staffed on the summit since 1932, conducting hourly weather observations. You can drive the 7.6 mile toll to the summit or take the cog railway, the world's first mountain-climbing cog railway, operational since 1869.
