Yellowstone N.P., Part 2 - 2024

We spent a whole day at Old Faithful. The Visitor Center was full of information and spent a good deal of time gathering information for Casen's project. Old Faithful was scheduled to erupt at 1:15pm and we had some time. We decided to walk around the path and came up to Grand Geyser that was due to erupt between 1:08pm and 4:15pm. We decided to wait since we have never seen Grand erupt before. We ended up waiting a couple of hours but it was so worth it.

Grand Geyser is located in the Upper Geyser Basin. According the ranger, there are 16 geysers that share a plumbing system with Grand. When it erupts it has powerful bursts that shoot 150 to 200 feet in the air making it he tallest predictable geyser in the world. We learned what to look for before it erupts. Another geyser (Turban) erupts several times in between Grand's eruptions. The pool also has to be full with no visible rock edges showing. Grand's eruption lasts 9-12 minutes and consists of 1-4 bursts.

We made our way to Old Faithful and didn't have to wait long to see it erupt.

Casen worked on his project while walking around all the different geysers and hot springs. Ernie has a thermal heat gun so Casen was able to check several hot springs to compare the temperatures.

We also checked out the mud pots. The one that impressed me the most was Dragon's Mouth Spring.
