Darby MT - 2023

Image
Any idea what Darby, Montana became famous for in 2017? Just south of Darby on highway 93 is Chief Joseph Ranch. This is where the ranch part of the television hit show Yellowstone was being filmed as John Dutton's home. Behind the gate, you can see the familiar white buildings. Unfortunately, you can't go inside the gates unless you plan on staying in one of the cabins for rent. That is the only way you get to tour the ranch and area. They aren't cheap and booking them is something you need to do well in advance.  We took a drive through Bitterroot National Forest. Just 24 miles south in the National Forest is Painted Rocks State Park.  Painted Rocks State Park is so named because of the lichens that cover the rock walls in shades of yellow, orange, and green. Diamond P Grassroots Bison (Harvest Host) - McCammon, ID

Image
After leaving Utah we stayed at a Harvest Host in McCammon, ID. Our host Jenny was amazing and we enjoyed the wagon ride to feed the Bison.  Approaching the Bison Would you be able to tell the difference between a male and female by their horns?  The male horn is on the left and the female horn is on the right. Dexter is the oldest bull.  It was pretty cool to feed the Bison. The babies were cute and hung out by their mamas. Our host made sure we all got pictures with the bison.

First stop was the Little Grand Canyon. This is called Navajo Sandstone Knob Our next stop was to see a dinosaur track. It was an absolutely beautiful drive to see the Indian Art Panel. Indian Art Panel Looking up from the art on the wall. Our next stop was the swing bridge. Bottle Mountain We also went to another area where there were dinosaur tracks and some Indian writings. The next day we took a drive through Joe's Valley. Our first stop was to see the memorial to the lost souls in The Wilberg Coal Mining disaster. It was a beautiful drive through Joe's Valley ending at the lake. The one thing that stood out to me was how many boulders looked like they were waiting to fall on the road. Our last adventure was to visit the Rochester Art Panel. We had to hike to get to it but it was pretty cool. A ja...
